Islam Unit

In this unit we will be exploring the origins of Islam, its achievements and impact on world history, and developing our awareness about the growth of Islamophobia in the 21st century. 

Early Islam - Geography Challenge 

Students were given two class periods to compete their "Geography Challenge" by utilizing two resources to label their own map, and to answer inferential questions. If you have not completed this, you are welcome to check out the materials to complete outside of class. This content is part of an assessment.

We will be viewing episode 1 of this documentary in order to deepen our background knowledge about the Origins of Islam.

We engaged with the text about Shahadah using our "mini-jigsaw" method. Students were graded on their ability to engage the text using our collaborative roles in order to promote discussion insure all table members understand the content of the text.

Pillar Four - Siyam (Fasting)

Pillar Five - Hajj (Pilgrimage)

In this lesson we used our "Jigsaw" format. 

1. Students join their expert groups. These groups are based upon their seat number. 

2. Students read, discuss, and record information using strategies practiced in their "Mini-Jigsaw". 

3. Students return to their home tables and teach their table partners about their specific article.

Islamophobia (Modern Social Issue) 

In this portion of our unit on Islam, we will explore the dramatic rise in Islamophobia in the United States and around the globe. Our goal will be to explore the "single stories" (myths and stereotypes) that are perpetuated by popular culture and news media about Islam and Muslim people. We will do this be documenting factual evidence and employing critical thinking skills with several resources. By the end of this portion of our unit students will be creating an educational poster about Islamophobia to be displayed around the school. 

Do We Look Like Terrorists to You? Reading 

This text is taken from Junior Scholastic. It explore some of origins (causes) of Islamophobia in the United States and its consequences for our Muslim community. Student read this while Mr. Chase was taking his leadership class on a field trip. Students were provided the option of reading it in collaborative groups or independently.

Islamophobia and the Migrant Crisis

We explored how Islamophobia is complicating solutions to our modern migrant crisis.

Students actively took notes and worked in small groups to document the facts versus the fictions regarding Islam and Muslim people.
